Perched more than 1,000 m above sea level in the rugged Cederberg Wilderness Area, Cederberg Private Cellar is one of South Africa’s highest-altitude wine producers. • The Nieuwoudt family (now in their fifth generation, with the sixth coming up) run about 66–74 hectares of vineyards among a much larger estate, in a virus-free, isolated terrain of sandstone, shale, decomposed gravel and clay soils. Their cool-Mediterranean mountain climate, clean air and purity of water help them produce wines that show crisp, transparent fruit, strong mineral and floral lift, and excellent structure. Red and white varietals are almost evenly planted; key grapes include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, plus some aromatic varieties. They also maintain strong environmental credentials: conservation is central (they’re part of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative, with much of the land preserved), little chemical intervention, and a commitment to sustainable viticulture.
